I was reading a really interesting article on Mark Sayers' blog earlier on Emerging Church. His observation was that it is a Generation X phenomenon. It's well worth a look if you have the time.
If you do make it to his article take a look at the lists that make up Gen x and Gen Y. He makes a number of powerful observations and comments that struck a chord with me.
His main supposition was that Gen Yers are generally more positive and ambitious and don't relate to Gen Xers sense of angst and that they are post postmodern.
My observation of his observations was that while I completely saw his point I wasn't convinced that this wasn't simply down to the fact that most of the 19 year olds that I know are less cynical and more ambitious simply because that is what young people are like. He makes the point that Gen Yers like action rather than talk, which I would again, completely concur with- but again, if you were to chart any late teens to early twenties generation in the last 40 years you would see the same pattern? (maybe I'm showing what I'm a cynical Gen Xer....). Isn't it as much to do with stage of life as it is the culture at the time and generations that inhabit it?
